A Saturday Of Balloons.

Heading out to Singapore for the first time this Wednesday night, so I wondered if I should take it easy in the mean time. Because Lord knows how crazy those ten days in the Orient are going to be. Saturday was not easy. Paul invited me to a networking party that his friend was throwing in Beverly Hills. I'm horrible at networking and enjoy small talk as much as genital warts - so I went to the party.

--

While at the networking party, I got a text from my friend who told me that the Sayonara Suzuki party was taking place that night. The party was first thrown five years ago for a Japanese guy named Suzuki, who was moving to Miami. And they've been throwing it every year since. My friend had gone last year and told me how epic it was, with guests ranging from Tarantino to cast members of Saturday Night Live. My fear was that I'd walk into a house filled with white people in yellow face and - like any angry Korean male - start a shooting rampage.

--

I figured that as Asians, we were already in costume. But Paul managed to find a couple of sushi chef robes at his place. My friend on the right went home to fetch his old Taekwondo uniform but couldn’t find it. So he wore a white bathrobe instead.

--

When I realized that all they had at the party was beer, sake, and Asian caricatures, I decided to head to a birthday party in downtown. A few weeks ago, Daniel had his girlfriend smack me in the balls when I wasn’t looking, much to my balls' chagrin. I think she felt bad about it, because that night she suddenly decided to avenge me and popped Daniel’s nuts. I was nearly moved to tears by this touching gesture. Daniel was sprouting tears as well.

--

A friend was headed to what he called a “porno loft party.” But when he got there, he informed us that the porno people had left, so now it was just a loft party. Instead we went to About, which is the fanciest noraebang in Ktown - except it’s not in Ktown. It’s in the crime-infested MacArthur Park area (Based on the one time I served jury duty, it’s also a great source of cheap sex. According to the deaf Mexican hooker who was on trial, for $40 you can “suck, fuck, and up the butt.” But that trial was before 2000, so I’d adjust the price for inflation). Somebody must have thrown a birthday party in the room before we got there, because the ceiling was covered with dozens of balloons. This made us surprisingly giddy til 5 AM.

This is my first time flying and, needless to say, I'm freaking out. I just bought my ticket online from Expedia, flying United Airlines. As an afterthought, I thought to google comments/complains and came up with some pretty scary stuff. The ones that apply most to me are delays/cancellations without notification, and having to show the credit card of the person who bought the ticket if it isn't the traveler.

Anyway, now that I'm done with the background info, would you care to share the experiences you've had with United Airlines? (Good or bad.)

I just bought new nail files, and am filled with such a simple happiness at how effective they are.

What are your simple pleasures in life?

Newish here...lurked for long while. I'm a single 27 year old living in a 1940s 1 bedroom apartment and just love vintage. I would also love to visit Japan someday. So Japan resides in the bedroom for the most part as to not overwhelm the rest of the apartment - I try to limit the pieces as well. I'm also very neat as you can see...it really does look like this most days (sad I know, organizing is an addiction to me).

Can anybody recommend good software or CDs for learning Italian? I have a book, which is great for writing, but I need to hear the words to remember them and figure out how to pronounce them correctly.

Also, the names of some good Italian bands would be great. I like rock, but foreign pop is good too. If you know any good Italian movies with English subtitles, the titles would be much appreciated too.

Grazie!

Hi! Once upon a time, I posted the dorm room I lived in last year in here, but most of the links have expired by now, and it was forever ago anyway. Maybe some of you will remember the giant cupcake, though? Anyway, I used to go to the University of Colorado, Boulder, but have since moved back home into my parents' house. I'm an American Studies and English major at the University of Maryland and this is my room:

It's a white-walled dorm room, but don't call it boring! )

The pictures are a bit dark, the sun was going down as I was taking them.
Yes, it's a single.. sort of? My roommate moved out after Fall Break to go live with her boyfriend and I've been fortunate enough to not have any crazies move in.

The Beatles' legacy? Macca should let it be
The Beatles were so avant garde that George Harrison is playing the jacket with his knee. Photograph: David Magnus/Rex Features. For one whose place in history is not so much secure as gloriously, unquestionably assured, Paul McCartney behaves as though there is some doubt. He is, lest we forget, not just any old ex-Beatle, but the Beatle. At least since John departed. That insecurity is )

Oh why hello there.
Lurker, first time poster. Still living with parents (hope to be off to college next fall) so things are a bit crammed every which way, but oh, I try. I apologize for the graininess of some these photos... The camera doesn't take the best pictures without the flash, and I wanted to preserve the ambient lighting for some of them.

Have a gander! )

Hello again. I made a post a few months ago, and I would love a bit more advice.

I've gone through many of my pictures and have picked about 90 of my favorite shots. I'd like to print several and put them up in my room... and after narrowing them down, I need to pick frames. So, question: what kind of frames would be best? Thick, thin, clip frames? What color? I'm still looking to break up the blue and green (without painting - it ain't happening).

Updates since last time: I've gotten white curtains to replace the blue ones. I removed a lot of books from the shelf and reorganized it, and stored almost all of the bookshelf knick-knacks visible in those pics.

I'm also in the midst of helping redecorate a room in my house that's to be a den. Can I talk about that here, or are there other communities a bit better aimed at other-room decorating advice? :)
